By Sacha Pisani11 June 2026

The magic of the Australia Cup. It is built on stories and we saw it midweek.
On Wednesday night, three clubs added another chapter of their own as Cumberland United, Maitland FC and Weston Bears secured places in the Round of 32.
For Cumberland United, it was history on Wednesday night. For Maitland FC, it was a long-awaited return. For Weston Bears, it was proof that last year's breakthrough was no one-off.

Founded in 1941, Cumberland United are one of South Australia's oldest football clubs. The Foxes had never reached the national stage before their midweek qualifier, but that changed thanks to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Adelaide Omonia Cobras.
The decisive moment came courtesy of Diamond Min, whose superb free-kick sealed a historic triumph and sent the second-tier club into the Round of 32 for the first time.
It is the latest milestone for a club that have spent more than eight decades navigating the highs and lows of South Australian football, winning league titles, securing promotions and repeatedly fighting its way back.
Now, for the first time in their history, Cumberland will test themselves against the nation's best.
In Northern NSW, Maitland FC ended a seven-year wait to return to the Australia Cup's national stage.

The Magpies were ruthless in a 4-0 victory over NPL NNSW rivals Kahibah FC, booking just their second-ever appearance in the Round of 32 and their first since 2019 as Braedyn Crowley led the way with a brace.
That year remains one of the most memorable in club history. Maitland were crowned NPL Northern NSW Premiers and produced the famous "Miracle in Maitland" during a dramatic finals run.
Joining them will be fellow Northern NSW outfit Weston Bears.
A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Edgeworth Eagles - secured by Brock Beveridge, was enough to secure the Bears a place in the Round of 32 for the second consecutive season.
Unlike Cumberland and Maitland, Weston are becoming familiar with this stage.
The Bears currently sit second in NPL NNNSW and continue to establish themselves as one of the region's most consistent clubs. Their latest qualification is another sign of a team that expects to compete deep into every competition it enters.
