By Sacha Pisani2 June 2026

Never before had North Sunshine Eagles qualified for the Australia Cup Round of 32. That changed after Tuesday night’s stunning upset.
Second-tier North Sunshine defied the odds to upstage NPL VIC giants and 2025 Australia Cup semi-finalists Avondale FC 3-2 in a thrilling showdown at Larissa Reserve, where Frenchman Julien Barras scored a goal-of-the-season contender.

North Sunshine reached the national stage for the first time in their history, while also qualifying for the Dockerty Cup semi-finals.
To put this into context, not only do North Sunshine play in VPL1 - the division below NPL VIC - but they are second from bottom and currently facing relegation through 15 rounds.

The Eagles are three points adrift of safety, while Avondale are fourth in NPL VIC and challenging for the premiership.
North Sunshine, though, threw form out the door in a remarkable result on home soil, where NPL VIC Golden Boot leader Bruno Fornaroli started on the bench.

Barass’ outrageous volley set the tone on the stroke of half-time - a goal that left fans and commentators stunned, before Avondale’s Maxx Green levelled proceedings nine minutes into the second half.
North Sunshine, however, were not to be denied in front of their passionate Albanian supporter base.
Adem Adovic’s header restored their lead with 19 minutes of regulation remaining. Kaan Elibol sealed it in the 88th minute.
Fornaroli’s late goal was merely consolation for Avondale.
