Seven weeks into the job. Now he's banned for the next 16 games
By Sacha Pisani16 July 2026

George Karkaletsis had been in charge of Eastern Lions for just seven weeks. Now the head coach will spend the next 16 on the sidelines.
Football Victoria (FV) handed the Eastern Lions coach a 16-game suspension following referee abuse during his side's VPL2 clash with Werribee City last week.
Karkaletsis was shown a yellow card early in the second half by referee Daniel Woodyatt before continuing to dispute the decision. He was then shown a second yellow card and dismissed.

It is understood he continued to abuse the referee as he was escorted away from the technical area.
The lengthy suspension means Karkaletsis is unlikely to return this season unless Eastern Lions mount a late surge into the VPL2 finals. As it stands, he will remain suspended until Round 11 of next season.
Ironically, the incident came during one of Eastern Lions' most important results of the campaign in Victoria’s third tier. The Lions fought back to defeat Werribee City 2-1 through goals from Tyreke Johnson and Eyob Zewdie, moving three points clear of the relegation zone with six rounds remaining.

Following the incident, Eastern Lions issued a statement reaffirming their commitment to respecting match officials.
“At Eastern Lions, respect for match officials is non-negotiable and fundamental to the game of football in Victoria,” the statement read.
“Referees play a vital role in ensuring our matches are safe, fair, and enjoyable for all participants. Without referees, there is no game.
“Every referee, regardless of age, experience, or level of competition, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
“We expect all members of our club – including players, coaches, team officials, parents, spectators and volunteers, to demonstrate positive behaviour towards match officials at all times.
“Football is a game built on respect. By showing appreciation for our referees and assistant referees, we help create a better experience for everyone involved and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the game across Victoria.”
Karkaletsis' suspension is the latest in a season that has seen Football Victoria take a firm stance on misconduct towards referees.
It is the eighth lengthy suspension handed to an NPL or VPL coach this season and the third major ban involving a head coach across Victoria's top three senior men's competitions.
