Oakleigh Cannons are already top. Now they've added A-League pedigree
By Sacha Pisani8 July 2026

NPL VIC leaders Oakleigh Cannons have strengthened their pursuit of more silverware with the signing of experienced defender Matthew Millar.
Oakleigh have added the former A-League player for the run home, bringing another proven professional into a squad already sitting atop the state's premier competition.
Millar has represented Melbourne City, Central Coast Mariners, Newcastle Jets and Macarthur FC - where he won an Australia Cup, during an extensive career in the A-League, while also spending time abroad in England, Scotland, Tajikistan and Iran.
The versatile defender, who played for Scottish side St Mirren, brings pace and attacking quality from wide areas, as well as experience from a career that has included league championship and Australia Cup success.
“After speaking with CT and learning more about the direction the club is heading, it was an easy decision. Oakleigh Cannons is without doubt one of the biggest clubs in Australia,” Millar said.
“The recent silverware speaks for itself, and when you combine that with the outstanding facilities and the ambition of everyone involved, it’s a really exciting place to be. I’m looking forward to contributing to the club’s continued success and can’t wait to get started.”

His arrival is another statement of intent from an Oakleigh side chasing further silverware in 2026.
The Cannons sit one point clear of Hume City at the top of NPL Victoria after being held to a 1-1 draw by Caroline Springs George Cross in Round 19.
Rather than standing still during a tight Premiership race, Oakleigh have strengthened with a player who has spent much of his career at professional level, while he also spent three years with NPL VIC rivals South Melbourne previously.
“His experience at the highest level of the game, combined with a winning mentality that includes Australia Cup and league championship success, will be a tremendous asset to our squad as we continue our pursuit of success,” Oakleigh said.
“Welcome to the Cannons, Matthew! We can’t wait to see you in blue and white at Jack Edwards Reserve.”
