Altona Magic head coach Goran Lozanovski will miss the remainder of the 2026 NPL VIC season after copping a 17-match suspension.

The former Australia international received the suspension after being escorted from the field, having confronted the referee in wild scenes in NPL VIC last week.

With 12 rounds played and 14 games remaining, relegation-threatened Altona will be without Lozanovski for the rest of the campaign.

Lozanovski received his marching orders in the first half against Avondale FC, who were 5-1 winners.

He was initially yellow carded by referee Yiannis Zisis, prompting a reaction from the Magic coach, who could be heard saying something to the official.

That resulted in the referee immediately brandishing another yellow card as Lozanovski was sent off. But Lozanovski was not done there.

In his second stint in charge of the Altona-based club, the 52-year-old walked onto the field and confronted the referee as tempers boiled over.

Players, including former Socceroo and A-League great Bruno Fornaroli and opposition from Avondale, had to step in help usher an incensed Lozanovski from the field, with the tactician seemingly heard yelling “racist” in the direction of the referee.

For context, Brunswick City coach Nick Kyriopoulos was handed a 16-game suspension earlier this season after confronting lineswoman Danielle Anderson in a VPL1 fixture.

“As a club, we recognise the importance of upholding the standards set out within Football Victoria’s Codes of Conduct and Behaviour, including the expectations placed on coaches, officials and club representatives at all levels of the game,” the club’s statement read.

“Respect for match officials and all participants in our game remains an important part of the values we uphold at Altona Magic.

“Goran accepts the outcome of the process and is remorseful for the incident and the attention it has brought. While emotions can run high in football, the club acknowledges that this moment fell short of the standards expected across the game.

“Goran has contributed significantly to football over many years, including during his time at Altona Magic, and we will continue to handle the matter with professionalism, care and respect for all involved.

“At this time, the club will not be providing any further public comment as we continue to navigate the matter internally. We now look forward to focusing on our football, our people and the continued support of the Altona Magic community.”
