George Karkaletsis has escaped relegation battles before. Eastern Lions hope he can do it again

Eastern Lions have a new coach. Step forward, George Karkaletsis.

Karkaletsis has been appointed head coach of the VPL2 club after Sean Douglas stepped down from the third-tier Victorian outfit earlier this month.

Eastern Lions have been flirting with relegation in 2026 - 10th in the standings but only two points clear of the drop zone.

Now, they have turned to the experienced Karkaletsis.

The 2023 VP1 Coach of the Year brings over 25 years of experience and a strong track record of multiple promotions, most recently guiding Manningham United to NPL VIC in 2023. He also helped survive relegation during his time at the club.

“George’s professionalism, leadership and commitment form the foundations of his competitive coaching style, which brings out the best in his players,” Eastern Lions said in a statement.

Eastern Lions visit bottom side Moreland City on Saturday.
